July Newsletter – Holiday Preparations

As holiday season approaches your spinal health may not be on your mind. But if you are going away this year it is advantageous to consider how to look after your back and neck, whilst making your preparations to travel to your chosen destination:

Do you still have an old pull along case?
Do you pack leaning over the bed?
Do you leave your pillow at home to save space?
Do you forget your take your ice pack or cold gel?
Do you sit for the whole journey?

The new style of suitcases with four wheels are best as they generally glide along beside you without effort, rather than necessitating you to twist and strain your shoulder whilst dragging that heavy weight behind you.

Raising your case, perhaps to dining table level, may mean it’s more comfortable to pack as there is far less bending involved. Just remember it’s advisable to get someone to help you lift it down afterwards.

I never travel without my neck pillow, I would far rather prioritise a good night’s sleep over multiple clothing choices, sleeping better will make you feel better, and therefore look much better than any well-crafted outfit ever could. But if you are going camping then an inflatable mattress is also a must.

Be prepared for any eventuality health wise, pack your preferred products in your main case so that whilst you are away you have access to; cold gel, instant ice packs and all manner of emergency medication, just in case you can’t buy suitable equivalents whilst you’re away.

It is also worth having a supply of over-the-counter medication in your hand luggage, in case you become uncomfortable on route, plus if you can buy some cold gel after you’ve checked in, then don’t miss the opportunity to pop this comfort restoring staple into your carry-on bag.

Once on the plane don’t just sit there staring at your phone, yes it is great to recline and get some shut eye but it is also important to move, not just to avoid a DVT, but also to reduce the chance of pain creeping up. If you are however, travelling by car do stop somewhere safe and take regular stretch breaks at least every two hours.

Also, the environment on a plane is very dry, so, why not kill two birds with one stone and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids necessitating you to quite naturally increase your need to get up to walk the length of the cabin and use the facilities.

Regular spinal checks are of benefit to us all and where a concern has previously existed then it is only sensible to keep it in check. It may therefore be wise to visit your Osteopath before you jet off, just to make sure that everything is a-okay. After all a holiday is a precious thing, so you won’t want to let pain stop you from thoroughly enjoying it.
